Terms & Conditions


By accepting to enter the Golden Baobab Prize, entrants will be deemed to have read and understood the terms and conditions of the competition and agreed to be bound by them.

General: GBP for Picture Books and Early Chapter Book

1. Entry is open to citizens of any African country. There are no restrictions on age or race. A copy of a passport or comparable document will be required of all longlisted entrants before they can proceed in the selection process.
2. Entrants may submit up to 3 stories per prize and are eligible to enter stories to more than one prize. Example: An entrant may submit up to 3 stories to the Golden Baobab Prize for Picture Books and at the same time up to 3 stories to the Golden Baobab Prize for Early Chapter Books.
3. There are no restrictions on theme but stories must be set in Africa or have a very evident African content.
4. Previous entrants of the Prize are eligible to enter in subsequent years. Past winners of the Prize are not eligible to re-enter.
5. Entrants declare that they are the sole proprietor of the work and it does not infringe any existing copyright. If any submission violates any existing copyright, entrants shall hold harmless and indemnify Golden Baobab.
6. Submissions must be made under the author's legal name, as it is written on his or her valid passport or other comparable identification. However, he or she may indicate a desire to be represented by a pseudonym in all external communications and in publishing.
7. Entries to the Golden Baobab Prize must be original and not previously published in any format or on any platform anywhere else. The unpublished manuscripts are to be written in English.
8. All documents or statements submitted by entrants to Golden Baobab as part of participation in the Golden Baobab Prize should be true and complete to the best of the entrants knowledge.
9. The decision of Golden Baobab shall be final and no correspondence will be entered into regarding results and the award of the Prize.
10. Neither Golden Baobab nor any of its directors, employees or partners shall accept any responsibility for any damage, loss, injury or disappointment suffered by any entrant participating in the Golden Baobab Prize or as a result of a winner accepting the Prize.
11. In the event of disputes regarding these terms and conditions in respect of the organization of the Prize, Golden Baobab shall have the right to make the final decision which shall be binding on all entrants and winners.
12. By submitting to the Golden Baobab Prize for Picture Books and Early Chapter Books you agree to receive emails containing periodic updates from Golden Baobab. Golden Baobab respects your privacy and will never share your personal information with any third party. You can choose to unsubscribe at any time.

General: GBP for Illustrators

13. Entry is open to citizens of any African country. There are no restrictions on age or race. A copy of a passport or comparable document will be required of all finalist entrants before they can proceed in the selection process.
14. Entrants are to submit based on the illustration briefs provided by the Prize. There are no restrictions on theme but illustrations must be have a very evident African content.
15. Previous entrants of the Prize are eligible to enter in subsequent years. Past winners of the Prize are not eligible to re-¬enter.
16. Entrants declare that they are the sole creator of the work and it does not infringe any existing copyright. If any submission violates any existing copyright, entrants shall hold harmless and indemnify Golden Baobab.
17. Submissions must be made under the illustrator's legal name, as it is written on his or her valid passport or other comparable identification. However, he or she may indicate a desire to be represented by a pseudonym in all external communications and in publishing.
18. All entries, except portfolio materials, must be original unpublished illustrations and created for the purpose of the Prize.
19. All documents or statements submitted by entrants to Golden Baobab as part of participation in the Golden Baobab Prize should be true and complete to the best of the entrants knowledge.
20. The decision of Golden Baobab shall be final and no correspondence will be entered into regarding results and the award of the Prize.
21. Neither Golden Baobab nor any of its directors, employees or partners shall accept any responsibility for any damage, loss, injury or disappointment suffered by any entrant participating in the Golden Baobab Prize or as a result of a winner accepting the Prize.

Promotion

24. Entrants agree to allow the free use of their names, photographs and general biographical information for publicity and news purposes during this and any future promotion by Golden Baobab or associated partners of Golden Baobab.
25. Entrants agree to participate in media interviews and promotional activities related to the Golden Baobab Prize during which they shall at all times conduct themselves with decency and professionalism. They shall not act in any way which might bring Golden Baobab into public disrepute.
26. All entrants grant Golden Baobab permission to use parts/segments/extracts or entire submissions to the Prize for press, promotion and for the website. Entrants will always be acknowledged.
27. Without the written consent of Golden Baobab, the use of the name or logo of Golden Baobab and the Golden Baobab Prize for any commercial or promotional use related to the submissions, is prohibited.

Prize Package

Winners:

28. Winners to the Golden Baobab Prize receive a cash award, media and publicity. Winners of the Literature Prizes are guaranteed a publishing contract including royalties from a Golden Baobab partner. Declining any part of the prize package is a refusal of the entire prize.
a. Winners are responsible for any and all tax consequences as a result of being a recipient and accepting the cash prize.
b. Golden Baobab reserves the right to revoke the prize if winners violate any aspects of these terms and conditions. In the event that Golden Baobab revokes the winning prize package, any financial benefit received by winner, including the cash prize shall be promptly reimbursed to Golden Baobab in full.

Shortlisted & Longlisted Writers:

29. Shortlisted and Longlisted entrants to the Golden Baobab Prize will receive promotional services for their entries from Golden Baobab with the goal of securing publication.
a. For a period of 24 months following the date of public announcement of the outcome of the Prize, Golden Baobab will retain the right to exclusively promote submissions to leading African and international publishers. Golden Baobab will receive no commercial reward from entrants for this service.
b. As the goal of Golden Baobab Prize is to produce more African stories for children, if Golden Baobab presents a publishing offer that an entrant declines, the entrant has 60 days to present a comparable or more favorable publishing offer. Where the entrant is unable to present this, the initial publishing offer must be accepted.
c. Within the 24 month period, if entrants directly receive a publishing offer, they shall refer it to Golden Baobab.
d. Within the 24 month period, entrants cannot submit their longlisted or shortlisted submission to another prize or publish it in any format or on any platform anywhere else.
e. Beyond the 24 month period, if entrants secure publishing contracts Golden Baobab has to be informed for its records.

Finalist Illustrators

All Other Entrants:

31. All other entrants will retain all rights to their submissions unless otherwise agreed in writing between the entrant and Golden Baobab.

Governing Law

32. The laws of the Republic of Ghana shall govern these terms and conditions.

The Golden Baobab Prize administration reserves the right to disqualify entries that do not conform to set rules. No correspondence will be pursued in this regard
